6th Generation Shift Knob Replacement

If you are installing a universal shift knob on a 6th generation (94-99) model Celica, you will find that there is some minor difficulty installing most universal shift knobs. You will not be able to push the shift boot down any further so that a shift knob can screw on. Why Toyota decided to do this, I do not know, but it is interesting to see that TRD has corrected this with their shortshifter. Fortunately, fixing this problem is quite simple...

First you will need to remove the old shift knob by unscrewing the knob (counterclockwise). Now, remove the trim and shift boot so that you can have access to the shifter. This can be done by bulling up on the rear section and pulling towards the rear of the car to free the front section. Don't bother unplugging any wires, as the trim doesn't have to be completely removed. Now locate and remove the white plastic ring around the shifter.

Next you will need a small file or knife to enlarge to enlarge the center of the ring so that it will drop further onto the shifter. Note that the you still want the ring to be tight on the shifter as it holds up the shifter boot...so a little force is not necessarily a bad thing for this install. As soon as the ring clears the bump on the shifter you are all set.

Simply replace the trim...and your shift knob should fit on very easily. Simply pull the shifter boot up to the knob and you are done...
